Healthiest Weight Florida Highlights 

DOH-Alachua HWF - “Walking Wednesdays” Employee Wellness Walks  HWF and the Wellness Leaders at DOH-Alachua offer  group walks on Wednesdays during lunch breaks for FDOH Alachua employees. The walks take place at 11:00 and 11:30 and are led by Wellness Leaders.  All fitness levels are welcome – this is an “at your own pace” activity!  

COACH (Combating Obesity for Alachua County’s Health) Weekly Wellness Walks – Weekly Wellness Walks will take place every Saturday at Sante Fe College Track  from 8A-10A. The walks will run from January 10th-February 28th.  These community walks are part of the COACH Initiative (Combating Obesity for Alachua County’s Health) that is run by the Alachua County Medical Society and Medical Alliance. Weekly Wellness Walks are sponsored by the Medical Society, Medical Alliance, Healthiest Weight Florida Alachua and many more community organizations.

DOH-Alachua HWF – Wellness Fair at Lake Forest Elementary School for Parents and Children – HWF will promote Healthiest Weight Florida and educate parents and children on the importance of healthy eating and active living to maintain healthy weight and to avoid chronic disease.  The wellness fair will take place on January 15th from 9A-1P at Lake Forest Elementary School, 4401 Se 4th Avenue, Gainesville, FL 32641.

Events 

Wed 01/14: FDOH Alachua staff- Emily Doane and the Minority AIDS Program volunteers will offer FREE HIV/STD testing at the Walgreens located at 1120 E University Ave in Gainesville. Testing will be held from 4-6pm, no appt needed.

Thurs 01/15: FDOH Alachua staff- Emily Doane and the Minority AIDS Program volunteers will offer FREE HIV/STD testing at the Pride Community Center located at 3131 NW 13th St. Suite 61 inside the Liberty Center in Gainesville. Testing will be held from 5-7pm, no apt needed. FDOH-Alachua Community Program Manager will represent FDOH-Alachua at the Community Care Transition Program Coalition which is a collaboration of health care providers working to reduce hospital readmission rates.  This meeting will be at Elder Options 100 SW 75th St Suite 301 Gainesville Florida from 10:00am to 12:00 noon.

Sat 01/17: The Minority AIDS Program is partnering with Black AIDS Services and Education (BASE), and Peers Advocating for Unified Services and Education (PAUSE) to put on the 3rd annual Road to Zero event. This event is targeted at teens to reduce incidence rates by addressing subjects such as mental health, STDs/HIV, healthy relationships, etc. There will be FREE Rapid Testing and STD testing. The event is from 10:30am-3pm at the MLK Center in Gainesville.

Tues 01/20: FDOH-Alachua Kidcare chair for Alachua and Bradford counties, Diane David, will be attendting the Alachua Child Abuse Prevention Task Force meeting from 11:30-2:00. The meeting will focus on planning events and drives for Child Abuse Prevention Month in April. FDOH Alachua staff- Emily Doane and the Minority AIDS Program volunteers will offer FREE HIV/STD testing at the Walgreens located at 3455 SW Archer Rd in Gainesville. Testing will be held from 5-7pm, no appt needed.
