Disease Control

Florida Department of Health in Alachua County

Services

The Alachua County Disease Control Unit groups together staff that conducts surveillance and investigations for Tuberculosis, Hepatitis, Sexually Transmitted Diseases, and other diseases/conditions of public health significance. It also houses regional programs in Tuberculosis and Sexually Transmitted Diseases for a 16 county area. Human surveillance of diseases and conditions is required in order to meet the mission of public health: to focus attention on identifying, assessing, and controlling the presence and speed of communicable diseases. There are over 90 diseases and conditions listed as reportable. Outbreaks of any disease, any case, cluster of cases, or exposure to an infectious disease, condition, or agent found in the general community or setting (e.g. school) should also be reported.
