Florida Department of Health in Alachua County

Program Description

The Florida Department of Health in Alachua County's Emergency Preparedness Section is actively involved in planning and responding to the public health needs of the community in times of emergency or disaster.  The priorities of the Florida Department of Health in Alachua are to assure that delivery of essential medical and public health services are maintained or restored following a disaster and that assistance is provided to meet emergency needs of the affected population.

Special Medical Needs Shelters

During a disaster, special needs shelters are designed to care for people who do not require hospitalization but have the following needs:

  • Require oxygen therapy
  • Unable to take medications or monitor vital signs without assistance
  • Have chronic conditions requiring assistance with daily life activities
  • Health/medical conditions requiring professional observation or assistance
  • Health conditions that require isolation and cannot be in a public/general shelter

Register for the Special Needs Program

The purpose of the Program is to provide transportation and sheltering for Alachua County residents who have mental or physical limitations or disabilities and have no other option but to request public assistance for evacuation planning in the event of a disaster such as a hurricane.
